Called 'Lady Nym' by a household that otherwise has little patience for airs, Nymeria Sand is Oberyn's second daughter and the one who most resembles the Free Cities that half-raised her: her mother was a Volantene noblewoman of old blood who taught her the whip before she died, and Nymeria has kept both the weapon and something of the Volantene taste for elegance and calculation ever since. Nymeria Sand's Volantene upbringing gives the story one of its few windows into how Dornish identity looks from a partly foreign vantage — she carries her mother's Free Cities polish alongside her father's spear-culture instincts, and the household treats the combination as an asset rather than a divided loyalty, a pointed contrast with how bastardy and foreign blood are treated elsewhere in Westeros.
