The Whents of Harrenhal are remembered for a castle too vast for their purse to properly hold, and Oswell, the lord's own brother, spent his adult life away from that leaking, half-empty ruin in the whiter and considerably less encumbered service of the Kingsguard. He wore a greathelm crowned with a black bat, House Whent's sigil turned personal badge, and the fragments the text preserves of him suggest a knight with a taste for dark jokes even his fellow white cloaks found unsettling — in Eddard Stark's dream of the tower's last morning, it is Oswell who kneels calmly sharpening his blade, as though a killing before breakfast were no different from any other chore. Reading the character

Oswell Whent survives in the text as barely more than a helm and a joke — the black bat crest he wears into Eddard Stark's dream, and a single line of gallows humor delivered while sharpening his sword before a fight he must know he won't survive. That thinness is itself telling: of the three Kingsguard at the tower, Whent is the one the books give the least interior life, and the effect is to make his death feel almost incidental next to Arthur Dayne's legend and Gerold Hightower's rank — a reminder that the tower cost ordinary competent knights as much as famous ones.
