Garlan Tyrell

Garlan, second son of Mace and Alerie, was dubbed 'the Gallant' by his elder brother Willas specifically to armor a plump, unglamorous boy against a court that mocked appearance before it bothered to learn character — a kindness that worked rather better than intended, since Garlan grew into precisely the knight the name had promised.

He married Leonette Fossoway and built a reputation, unlike his more celebrated younger brother Loras, less on tourney victories than on being the Tyrell most other people actually trust to get something done.

He fought at the Battle of the Blackwater wearing the rainbow-and-stag armor of the murdered Renly Baratheon, a piece of battlefield theater meant to convince Stannis's more superstitious soldiers that Renly's ghost had turned against the brother who killed him — a trick that worked well enough to help break the attackers' morale at a critical moment.

He was rewarded afterward with the lordship of Brightwater Keep, seat of the attainted House Florent, making him simultaneously Ser Garlan Tyrell of Highgarden and Lord Garlan of Brightwater Keep — an odd double station that suits a man more concerned with usefulness than titles.
