Maege Mormont rules Bear Island the way her House's carved gate depicts its women — armed, unbothered by convention, and entirely capable of holding a keep with an axe as readily as a lord might hold one with a sword. Widowed and the mother of five daughters, she raised her house to expect that a Mormont woman fights when fighting is called for, a lesson her eldest daughter Dacey took to Robb Stark's own bodyguard and did not survive. Maege's loyalty to the King in the North's cause is blunt and unhedging, delivered in the same plain northern speech her family is known for, without the courtly hedging southron lords favor.
