Meera Reed was raised in the drowned, hidden fastness of Greywater Watch, a crannogwoman trained to hunt with net and three-pronged frog spear rather than the sword and lance highborn training favors elsewhere in the Seven Kingdoms. Sent north with her younger brother Jojen on their father's orders, following a green dream too vivid to ignore, Meera proves herself the more practical and physically capable of the pair — the one who fights when fighting is needed while Jojen watches and warns. Her devotion to Bran, whom she and her brother are charged with guiding, has by the published books' end cost her the safety and, increasingly, the company of the sibling she set out north beside. A maester notes that crannogmen are seldom seen this far from the Neck's marshes, and Meera less often still — which makes her presence at the story's northernmost edge all the more striking.
