Tyrosh

The city of the painted beard, and no shortage of swords for hire

The Free Cities
Kind
city

A garish, mercenary-exporting Free City whose freeborn men dye their hair and beards every color but the one nature gave them.

Tyrosh sits amid volcanic islets rich in the dyes and sulfurous salts that give the city its most famous vanity: freeborn Tyroshi men color their beards green, purple, blue, or orange as a mark of status, the brighter and stranger the shade the better. The city's soil is poor for growing much beyond the minerals that stain it, and Tyrosh has made a livelihood instead of exporting fighting men, ready hands for whichever paymaster in the region's endless small wars offers the fattest purse.

Trade, faith, and rule

Along with Lys and Myr, Tyrosh has warred over the Disputed Lands and the Stepstones for longer than any Tyroshi magister can now explain, a rivalry that keeps sellsword companies from all three cities perpetually in work. Tyroshi captains have a name for flamboyance to match their beards, and Tyroshi coin, dye, and mercenaries turn up on battlefields the city itself never bothers to fight.

Tyrosh in the novels

This carries the place's part in the published novels. Read on only if you do not fear to know.

These partings name deaths, endings, and roads not yet ridden in the books. Unveil them only if both roads are known to you — or if you do not fear to know.
