Reading the character
Jorah Mormont's arc is built almost entirely around the gap between service and forgiveness — he spends years trying to earn back Daenerys's trust after a betrayal that predates the story's opening chapters, and the text is unusually patient about making clear that good deeds done for the wrong original reason don't automatically erase the reason. It's one of the more sustained studies in the series of what genuine reform actually costs, as opposed to what it merely looks like from outside.
His exile also gives the story a rare sustained look at Essos from the bottom rather than the top — slavery, disease, and the fighting pits, experienced by a Westerosi lord's son with nowhere left to fall back on, rather than filtered through the relative safety of Daenerys's own court.
