The line of House Tully, generation by generation

The family tree of House Tully

House Tully, root and branch — 18 names across 7 generations, seated at Riverrun in The Riverlands. Each band below is a single generation, eldest first; the mono line beneath a name gives its parents, so the descent reads down the page. Dates follow the maesters, and where the songs outrun the records the chronicle hedges the legend as legend.

  1. Generation 1

    The Coming of the Andals

    Ser Edmure Tully

in the days of the Andal coming, if the songs are true

    Styled Knight

A knight of the First Men who fought beneath Tristifer Mudd, the Hammer of Justice, in many of his ninety-nine victories — and who, when the hundredth battle broke that king, took his sons over to the Andal warlord Armistead Vance. It was not the sort of choice the songs praise, but it was the sort that leaves descendants.

    Axel Tully

    c. the Andal conquest of the Trident

    Styled First Lord of Riverrun

    Parents Ser Edmure Tully

For his father's service Armistead Vance granted him the ground where the Tumblestone meets the Red Fork, and there he raised the castle of Riverrun; the family has declined to leave it since. The Tullys were never kings, a fact they bore with more patience than most of their neighbors.

  2. Generation 2

    Under Quarrelsome Kings

    Elston Tully

slain c. three centuries before the Conquest, if the count of kings holds

    Styled Lord of Riverrun

He rose with the river lords against the pious cruelties of King Humfrey Teague and did not live to see how it ended. The gods the Teagues persecuted proved more durable than the Teagues.

    Tommen Tully

fl. c. 100 BC, when the krakens came inland

    Styled Lord of Riverrun

When the krakens came he abandoned Riverrun without a fight and carried his strength to Raventree Hall, backing Agnes Blackwood against Harwyn Hoare to no avail whatever. His house survived the ironmen's yoke by keeping its head down and its ledgers current.

  3. Generation 3

    The Conquest

    Edmyn Tully

    fl. 1–9 AC

Styled Lord of Riverrun, first Lord Paramount of the Trident, Hand of the King

First of the river lords to abandon Harren the Black for Aegon Targaryen, a piece of timing that earned his house dominion over lords far older and prouder. He served two years as Hand before discovering, wisely, that he preferred Riverrun.

  4. Generation 4

    The Old King's Peace

    Prentys Tully

    d. 59 AC, of the Shivers

Styled Lord of Riverrun, master of laws

    Wed Lady Lucinda Tully

Called to court as lord justiciar and master of laws during the boy king Jaehaerys's minority, he distinguished himself chiefly by giving no offense, and was thanked and sent home the year the king came into his own rule. The Shivers took him at Riverrun a day apart from his wife, which was the only parting they ever managed.

    Lucinda Tully

    d. 59 AC, of the Shivers

    Styled Lady of Riverrun

    Wed Prentys Tully

Famed as the most pious woman in the Seven Kingdoms, and famously certain that everyone else was not. Her zeal against sin was tireless, whatever the sinners may have thought of it.

  5. Generation 5

    The Dance of the Dragons

    Grover Tully

    d. 130 AC

    Styled Lord of Riverrun

An old man at the Great Council of 101, he backed the male claim then and clung to it through the Dance, though age and his own household conspired to keep his banners furled. He died still arguing for a king his levies never fought for.

    Elmo Tully

    d. 131 AC

    Styled Lord of Riverrun

Grover's grandson — his father goes unnamed in every record the Citadel holds — he ruled Riverrun in all but name through the war, and led the river lords to Second Tumbleton for Queen Rhaenyra while the old lord still raged for her rival. He was lord in his own right for forty-nine days before a drink of bad water on the march accomplished what the war had not.

    Kermit Tully

    fl. 131 AC

Styled Lord of Riverrun, Lord Paramount of the Trident

    Parents Elmo Tully

A green boy who led the river lords down the kingsroad and slew Lord Borros Baratheon with a morningstar, ending the Dance in a single stroke of youthful arithmetic. For a season the boy lord of Riverrun was the most consequential man in the realm.

    Oscar Tully

    fl. 131 AC

    Styled Ser

    Parents Elmo Tully

Kermit's younger brother, knighted on the field of the Kingsroad after putting three men in the ground in the last battle of the Dance. He later gathered restless swords into a free company and took them across the narrow sea, which is where the Trident has always sent its second sons.

  6. Generation 6

The Last Lords Before the Storm

    Hoster Tully

    d. 299 AC

Styled Lord of Riverrun, Lord Paramount of the Trident

    Minisa Whent

    Styled Lady of Riverrun

    Wed Hoster Tully

A daughter of Harrenhal who gave Riverrun three living children and died in childbed striving to give it a second son. Her lord husband never took another wife, which at Riverrun passed for eloquence.

Dashed cards mark bastards and baseborn lines. Names shaded behind the veil belong to the present tale; unveil them only if you do not fear to know.

Cadet branches and offshoots

Younger sons and daughters whose blood struck out on its own — some founding houses of their own name, some withered to a line in the annals, some disputed to this day.

What the maesters dispute

Where the records quarrel, contradict, or fall silent, this chronicle sets the arguments down rather than settling for you what the texts leave open.

  1. The tale of Ser Edmure's turning of the cloak and Lord Axel's reward survives only in songs and the histories built upon them; all dates before the Teague kings are guesswork dressed as scholarship.

  2. The name of Lord Grover's son — Elmo's father, Kermit's grandsire — appears in no surviving record, an omission some maesters blame on the burning of archives during the Dance and others on the man having done nothing worth recording.

  3. Between Lord Kermit and Lord Hoster stretch near one hundred and seventy years of Tullys whose names the Citadel's copies do not preserve; even Lord Hoster's own father goes unnamed in every chronicle and appendix alike.

  4. Whether old Lord Grover died before or after Riverrun declared for Queen Rhaenyra is disputed, and with it the question of whether Ser Elmo's long neutrality was prudence, patience, or quiet usurpation of a living lord.

  5. The mummers' version of these events has the Blackfish slain at the second fall of Riverrun; no chronicle supports this, and the account is noted here only as a show-only invention (the maesters of the stage were ever careless with their sources).

How many members of House Tully are in the books?

This tree gathers every named Tully the novels and their histories record — kings and lords, daughters and bastards, cadet offshoots and all. The maesters count only what the texts preserve; where a name survives without its deeds, the chronicle says as much rather than inventing the rest.

How do I read this House Tully family tree?

Each band down the page is one generation, eldest first. Beneath a name, the mono line names that person's parents, so descent reads from the top down. Dashed cards mark bastards and baseborn lines; cards behind the veil hold fates from the present tale, revealed only if you choose to unveil them.

Where does House Tully come from and where do they sit?

House Tully holds Riverrun. The tree opens with the earliest forebears the records name — legendary where the singers outrun the maesters, firmer once true dates begin — and this chronicle marks the myths as myths, never dressing a song up as a certainty.

Which House Tully tales are still disputed?

A good many. Contested parentage, missing generations, bynames left unexplained, and legends the singers embroider all appear under 'What the maesters dispute' at the foot of this page, where the arguments are set down without pretending to close what the books leave open.
