The captain who lost the crown at the kingsmoot and kept fighting for the islands anyway
Asha Greyjoy is Lord Balon's only surviving daughter and, in the eyes of most of the ironborn who've sailed with her, a better captain than either of the brothers who outrank her by sex alone. She commands the Black Wind, holds Deepwood Motte for her father's crown during the war the Citadel files under the ironborn's invasion of the North, and stands for the driftwood crown herself at a kingsmoot in Old Wyk — arguing, more sensibly than most of the captains present cared to hear, that the islands cannot win a war against the entire mainland and ought to stop trying.
The kingsmoot chooses her uncle Euron instead. She leaves Old Wyk without the crown but not without conviction — the same argument that lost her the vote, that the ironborn cannot outlast a war against the whole mainland, keeps shaping her choices as the fighting for the North grinds on around Deepwood Motte and the ground she once helped take for her father's crown.
How that campaign resolves for her personally is left unsettled in the published chronicle. What is settled is her relationship with her brother Theon — genuine affection across a family not otherwise known for it, and very possibly the one loyalty in House Greyjoy that survives every kingsmoot, invasion, and betrayal the rest of the family manages to generate.

Reading the character
Asha Greyjoy spends her whole arc arguing a position her own culture has no real appetite for hearing: that the ironborn cannot win a war against the entire mainland and should stop pretending otherwise. She is, by most measures the text gives, the most competent captain her generation of Greyjoys produces, and it buys her a losing bid at the kingsmoot rather than the crown her record arguably earned.
What outlasts the political defeat is the one relationship in House Greyjoy that reads as uncomplicated: her bond with her brother Theon, genuine across a family not otherwise known for warmth, surviving invasions, betrayals, and every kingsmoot the rest of the household manages to generate. Her story becomes, after Deepwood Motte, a case study in how quickly a competent captain's fortunes can be overtaken by a war she was never really in a position to win outright.
