The Exile and the Dreamer (c. 114 BC)
Aenar Targaryenthe Exile
fl. c. 114 BC, if the Valyrian records be trusted
EstiloLord of Dragonstone
Desposouwives and sisters, their names lost
He sold his estates in the Freehold and removed his household, five dragons, and his pride to a smoking rock in the narrow sea, on no firmer authority than a daughter's dream. Twelve years later Valyria burned, which rather settled the argument.
Her book of prophecies, Signs and Portents, is said to survive on Dragonstone, though no maester of the Citadel has been permitted to weigh its accuracy. Foreseeing the Doom remains the single best-attested prediction in the history of the discipline.
What precisely he did to earn the style 'Glorious' the chronicles neglect to say, which tells us something about the chronicles. He wed his sister after the Valyrian fashion and kept the line unbroken.

Lords of the Narrow Sea (c. 100–50 BC)
Aegon Targaryen
EstiloLord of Dragonstone
DesposouElaena Targaryen, his sister; they ruled together
One of the few women to rule Dragonstone in her own right, jointly with her brother. The records grant her a name and little else, a courtesy the records extend to most women.
Eldest of the three sons of Aerys who held Dragonstone each in turn, the first two dying childless. The Citadel possesses no explanation, which has never stopped anyone from proposing one.
Last of the three brothers, and the only one to leave a son — a small mercy without which the Conquest, the realm, and this chronicle would all be considerably shorter.
Father of the Conqueror and his sister-queens, and — if the kitchen gossip of Dragonstone is admitted as evidence — of Orys Baratheon besides. He did not live to see his children remake a continent.

Valaena Velaryon
EstiloLady of Dragonstone
DesposouAerion, Lord of Dragonstone
Herself half Targaryen through her mother, so the Conqueror's Valyrian blood ran thick on both sides. The Velaryons have never let anyone forget it.

Rhaena Targaryenthe Queen in the West; the Black Bride
23 – 73 AC
DragãoDreamfyre
DesposouAegon the Uncrowned, her brother; Maegor I, her uncle; Androw Farman
Twice a queen and thrice a widow-maker's widow: her brother slain by their uncle, her uncle dead on his throne, her third husband a poisoner she fed to her dragon's namesake isle. She ended her days at Harrenhal, which she called a fitting home for grief.
Rightful heir by any law of succession then written, he raised his banner against his uncle and met Balerion above the Gods Eye. Quicksilver was a quarter the Black Dread's size, a ratio the battle faithfully reproduced.
Kept at court as his uncle Maegor's squire, which is to say his hostage. When his mother fled to raise the realm against the king, the boy paid the price of her courage; Tyanna's questioners took nine days about it.
Once heir to the Iron Throne, she claimed the Black Dread at thirteen and vanished for a year, returning fevered from — Septon Barth believed — Valyria itself. What died at Dragonstone was recorded by the only man brave enough to attend it, and his account is not read for pleasure.
Aerea's twin, given to the Faith as an infant, or possibly the twin swapped for Aerea — their mother alone knew and declined to say. She lived out her days quietly in the Starry Sept, which for a woman of this family constitutes a triumph.
The first princess of her name, a merry child carried off by the Shivers at seven. Two later Daeneryses would fare better, though one of them is still being written.
Heir apparent for near forty years, slain on Tarth by a Myrish crossbow bolt meant for another man. His death posed the question — his daughter or his brother? — that the Old King answered one way, the Great Council another, and the Dance answered in fire.
Given to the Faith, she became the family's peacemaker and died of greyscale contracted nursing its victims. Sanctity is rare enough in this house to deserve a line of its own.

Vaegon Targaryenthe Dragonless
b. 63 AC
EstiloArchmaester of the Citadel, ring, rod and mask of yellow gold
The only dragon ever to earn an archmaester's mask, he preferred equations to courtiers and told his father as much. The Citadel notes with quiet satisfaction that the family's sole maester is also its least troublesome member.
Timid, sweet, and frightened of nearly everything, she died at eighteen birthing the daughter who would be Viserys I's first queen. Through gentle Daella, then, runs the line to Rhaenyra — history has a taste for such ironies.
The wild daughter, caught at scandal, sent to the silent sisters, and gone over the wall to Lys before her vows. She ended a wealthy woman keeping a famous pleasure house in Volantis, and when invited home replied that she was home — one rather admires her.
The beauty of the brood, promised to old Lord Manderly and determined to wed a prince instead. A midnight horse race through King's Landing, taken drunk, ended the question at seventeen.
The last and simplest of the thirteen, her mother's shadow and comfort. Seduced and abandoned by a wandering singer, she drowned herself in Blackwater Bay; the court was told a summer fever, and the queen never recovered from the truth.
Passed over for the throne twice — once by her grandfather, once by the lords at Harrenhal — for the grave defect of her sex. She died at Rook's Rest at five-and-fifty, meeting two dragons alone, and no one who watched called her the lesser claimant again.

Alicent Hightower
88 – 133 AC
EstiloQueen of the Seven Kingdoms
DesposouViserys I
Ser Otto's daughter, who read to the Old King through his failing years and wed his heir's heir within two years of Aemma's grave being closed. Four children, one crown wrongly or rightly seized for her son, and a war named for a dance later, she died of the Winter Fever asking to see children the war had already spent.
The Sea Snake's daughter, offered to King Viserys as a bride and passed over for Alicent, she claimed instead the oldest dragon alive and, in time, the most dangerous prince. She died of a childbed gone wrong at Driftmark; the tale that she rose from her deathbed to die beside Vhagar is precisely the sort her family favors, which does not make it false.
Rhaenys's son, wed to Rhaenyra to bind the two claims the Great Council had sundered, his affections engaged, notoriously, elsewhere. His friend Ser Qarl Correy put a blade in him at a fair in Spicetown over a quarrel no two accounts agree on; the three sons of his marriage bore his name, and the court wits observed that they bore little else of his.

Rhaenyraa Delícia do Reino
97 DC – 130 DCReinoucontestado, 129–130 DC
EstiloPrincess of Dragonstone; queen by her partisans' reckoning (129–130 AC)
The son cut from Aemma at his father's word, he outlived his mother by a single day. Prince Daemon's cup-jape about an heir for a day cost him the succession and fixed it upon Rhaenyra — no Targaryen ever moved history further by leaving it faster.
Venceu a Dança e perdeu o futuro.
The gentlest of Alicent's sons, which the burning of Bitterbridge suggests was a low bar. He died at sixteen in the night chaos of Second Tumbleton, his body never surely identified among the burned, a detail that bred pretenders for a generation.
Daemon's daughter by Laena Velaryon, who flew a half-grown dragon against Sunfyre to cover Dragonstone's escape and walked away from the wreck scarred and unrepentant. She wed the Sea Snake's heir and gave the regency councils no end of grief, all of it deserved.
Baela's twin, born in Pentos, whose egg finally hatched after the Dance had killed nearly every other dragon — Morning, the last new hope of her kind. Six daughters by her second husband carried the blood into the Reach.
Rhaenyra's heir, whose embassy won the North and the Vale for his mother while his uncles won only battles. He fell at the Gullet leading from the front, brown-haired like Ser Harwin Strong and brave like nobody's business — the maesters may draw their own conclusions, as they always have.
Sent to Storm's End as an envoy at fourteen and chased into the storm by his uncle on a dragon five times Arrax's size. His death was the war's point of no return; Aemond claimed he meant only to frighten the boy, and Vhagar was not consulted.
Thirteen years old when King's Landing fell apart around him, he tried to fly a half-wild dragon not his own to save the others from the Dragonpit mob. He fell from Syrax's back over Flea Bottom; courage and sense ripen at different rates.
Born a moon too soon on Dragonstone, in the very hour her mother learned of her half-brother's coronation, and born dead and malformed. Rhaenyra laid the child at the greens' feet; by some accountings she was the Dance's first casualty, dead before the first banner rose.
Six years old when the men called Blood and Cheese made his mother choose, then took his head regardless of her answer. Whatever else is said of the Dance, it was paid for in coin like this.
Simple, sweet, and married at ten to the boy whose mother her father had fed to a dragon — the peace of the realm resting on two traumatized children. She went from a window of Maegor's Holdfast like her mother before her, and whether she jumped or was helped remains one of the regency's uglier questions.
The son his mother named to die and could not save by naming. Smuggled toward Oldtown, he was torn apart — or crushed, the accounts differ — by a mob at Bitterbridge at the age of three; the town paid for it later, which mended nothing.

EstiloKing of the Seven Kingdoms (r. 161–171 AC); septon
Wife to a king who would not touch her and prisoner of the Maidenvault he built to prove it, she escaped its walls repeatedly and its purpose once, spectacularly. The son she bore in 170 AC she named Daemon, and he would cost the realm more than all her defiances together.

b. between 178 and 184 AC; her end unrecorded
Desposounone; she collected proposals as other women collect jewels
Last and loveliest of the Great Bastards, one eye green and one blue, learned in tongues and — the credulous add — in darker arts involving baths of blood. Bittersteel and Bloodraven both wanted her; she took the one as a lover and the other's war as an entertainment, and outfoxed history itself by escaping its notice.
The finest man of his line, who won the Redgrass Field with a hammer-stroke and died at Ashford of his own brother's mace, defending a hedge knight in a trial of seven. Maekar's blow was accidental; the realm's loss was not, and every misery of the next fifty years may be traced to that cracked helm.

The paternity of Daeron II: Aegon IV on his deathbed hinted his heir was the Dragonknight's son, not his own. No proof was ever offered, the accusation flattering neither the accuser's honor nor his queen's, yet it armed Daemon Blackfyre's cause and five rebellions besides. The Citadel observes that Daeron's conduct was his mother's and his uncle's in every particular that mattered, whichever man supplied the seed.
Whether Orys Baratheon was truly Lord Aerion's bastard, and every stag-crowned claim since therefore doubly dragon-blooded. Aegon the Conqueror neither owned nor denied it; his silence has kept the question alive for three hundred years.
The paternity of Rhaenyra's three elder sons, brown of hair in a family of silver: Velaryon by law, Strong by rumor, and the rumor cost a tongue or two before it cost a war. Grand Maester Mellos held that hair proves little; Vaemond Velaryon held otherwise, briefly.
Whether the babe presented to Robert Baratheon in a crimson cloak was Prince Aegon at all. The Golden Company now marches for a young man who says it was not; Lord Varys is curiously adjacent to every version of the tale, and the Citadel reserves judgment until a dragon does.
The paternity of Viserys Plumm, got — the court japed — either by an ancient husband dead on his wedding night or by King Aegon IV, who was demonstrably alive. The Plumms of the westerlands and a certain sellsword captain in Meereen have dined on the ambiguity ever since.
The claimants of the Great Council of 101 included, among the nine lesser candidates, descendants of Princess Saera by her Volantene patrons. Saera herself declined to press a claim, reportedly amused; her line's whereabouts today the Citadel cannot state.
Why Lords Aelyx, Baelon, and Daemion each held Dragonstone in turn and died — the first two childless — the pre-Conquest records do not say, having largely burned with Valyria's other certainties. Where records are silent, maesters multiply.
The outlaws styled the Rat, the Hawk, and the Pig appear twice in the annals a generation apart: assaulting Princess Aelora at a masked ball, and slain fighting Prince Daeron in 251 AC. Whether these were the same men grown old in infamy, sons trading on the style, or a scribe's contamination of one tale by another, the maesters dispute with more enthusiasm than evidence.
What Brynden Rivers became beyond the Wall after 252 AC. The wildlings tell of a sorcerer in a hollow hill wearing weirwood pale and red; the Citadel files this among singers' inventions, though it files it carefully.
What passed in the Red Mountains of Dorne in 283 AC, where Lord Eddard Stark found his sister dying and left three Kingsguard buried — knights who by every oath should have stood beside their king, or his heirs, and stood instead by a tower the smallfolk name Joy. The records are silent, Lord Eddard was silenter, and the Citadel merely notes that silence, too, is a kind of testimony.
