在诸神与世人眼中，私生子皆是在七神或旧神尚未圣化的婚姻之外所诞下的孩子。信仰将其视为情欲与谎言的果实，警告说卑贱的血脉终将流向背叛与骄傲——这是一句平民口耳相传、上层贵族也半信半疑的诽谤之词。
私生子既不能承袭父亲的姓氏，也不能继承他的领地。这个王国转而以九个地域性的姓氏为他打上烙印，使一个人光凭姓名，便同时宣告了自己的耻辱以及养育他的那片地图一隅。他或许在父亲的厅堂中被抚养长大，或许被弃置于陋室之中——无论哪种境遇，这个姓氏都将追随他直至坟墓。
然而这条界线，远比修士们所宣扬的要模糊得多。一位出身高贵的父亲，往往会将自己的私生子留在自家屋檐之下抚养，不止一人待这样的孩子，甚至胜过自己的嫡出继承人——而这，恰恰正是问题所在，因为一个被抬举得过高的私生子，学会了去渴求律法所禁止他拥有的东西。
